Do you have documents, photographs, or artifacts that help tell the story of Port Washington or its residents? Help us preserve Port’s history by donating materials relating to the many facets of life here in town. The History Center welcomes donations of materials relating to the Port Washington community, its local environs, and to a lesser extent, New York City. Please note that the Library’s collection policy does not allow us to accept (by gift or purchase) objects or collections with restrictions. All donations are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please see our Collection Policy to better understand what type of materials the History Center is interested in adding to our archives.

MATERIALS WE DO NOT COLLECT

Home Movies and Amateur Films

The History Center does not accept donations of home movies and amateur films for the collection.

Photocopies and Duplicates

The History Center does not accept:

  • Photocopies of materials held in other repositories, unless access to originals is limited.
  • Photocopies or other reproductions of original materials, unless the originals are no longer in existence or are unavailable to the public; however, quality facsimile editions are welcomed when originals cannot be acquired.
  • Duplicates of materials already in the History Center, unless the duplicate is in better condition.

Research Notes

The History Center does not accept research notes, unless included as a sub-unit of a collection of related primary material or largely focused on local genealogy.

Current local, state and federal government records.

Autographs (signatures with no historically significant information), in most cases.

Large collections unrelated to the History Center or Library’s mission or to existing holdings.

Materials in poor condition requiring extensive conservation or materials that pose risk to our existing collections.

Gifts to the History Center can be made in many ways. If you are interested in donating materials to our collection, please complete our online Collection Donation Form, located here.

For more information, please contact us by phone at (516) 883-4400 ext. 1409, or by emailing localhistory@pwpl.org.
