Donate Your Collections

Do you have papers or photos that tell the story of your family or Port Washington? Help us to preserve Port’s history by donating materials relating to the many facets of life in our community. The LHC welcomes donations of materials relating to the Port Washington community but considers such donations on a case by case basis. Please see our Collection Development Policy to better understand what type of materials the LHC collects.

Materials we DO NOT COLLECT

Large collections unrelated to the LHC or Library’s mission or to existing holdings.

Photocopies of materials held in other repositories unless access to originals is limited.

Photocopies or other reproductions of original materials, unless the originals are no longer in existence or are unavailable to the public; however, quality facsimile editions are welcome when originals cannot be acquired.

Duplicates of materials already in the LHC, unless the duplicate is in better condition.

Research notes, unless included as a sub-unit of a collection of related primary material or largely focused on local genealogy.

Current local, state and federal government records.

Autographs (signatures with no historically significant information), in most cases.

Collection that are primarily in foreign languages (case by case basis).

Materials in poor condition requiring extensive conservation or materials posing risk to existing collections.

Gifts to the Local History Center can be made in many ways. For more information please contact the LHC at (516) 883-4400 ext. 168, or localhistory@pwpl.org . Please provide us with as much detail as possible about the material that you wish to donate.
